Pudong District of Shanghai East 10/20/06

Just 15 years ago the area east of the Huangpu River was nothing but mud flats, rice fields and village huts. Since then a massive development project has turned Pudong into a burgeoning business district featuring the tallest hotel in the world, China's largest stock exchange, and soon, the Shanghai World Financial Center. This building has a scheduled completion date of 2008 and when finished it will rise 95 stories--1,509 feet.

Pudong as seen from north of the city on the Huangpu River. The tallest building on the left side of the picture is the Jin Mao Building, home to the Grand Hyatt Hotel, the tallest hotel in the world. In 2003 this building was the world's third tallest, rising 88 stories--1381 feet. The Grand Hyatt encompasses the 54th-88th floors of this high-rise and includes a beautiful and dizzying 33 story atrium and an 87th floor Sky Lounge with spectacular views of the city.

Oriental Pearl TV Tower--Asia's tallest structure (third tallest TV tower in the world) at 1550 feet. It is known locally as "twin dragons playing with pearls".
